Since a nearby in fielder is more inclined to getting hurt by effective shot, Dhoni opened his cushions and let Rahane wear it as he remained with no leg monitors.
Presumably gaging that a quicker one from Ashwin could coincidentally hit him on the shin region, he advised Raina to stand about 15 meters directly behind him.
Once the over was finished by Ashwin, the umpires permitted the substitute to turn out with shin cushions for Rahane while MS Dhoni got back his own and wore it from that point on.
